When I was young I wanted to be a cartoonist but entered college hoping to become a commercial artist. I had an interest in illustrating sports magazines and bought a camera and began photographing football games for reference material. I quickly discovered there was more of a market for my photographs than my drawings. The school paper and yearbook wanted photos as well as the coaches, the players, their families and their girlfriends so photographs eventually replaced the drawings in my portfolio. My professional photography career began in 1971 as a staff photographer for the Hagerstown, MD Morning Herald. I won first place in Spot News from the Pennsylvania Managing Editors before transferring to the Heralds' corporate headquarters, The South Bend Tribune later that year. At the Tribune I had special interests in features and sports that included Notre Dame football games and special basketball games for U.P.I. I am a native of Martinsburg, WV which is located only seventy miles from Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. The chamber says it's "the northern gateway to the Shenandoah Valley". I return as often as possible to fish the states' mountain streams or the Chesapeake Bay and spend time with lifelong friends pretending we're teenagers again. I began freelancing in 1975 with editorial assignments for college publications and slide shows (remember them?) for advertising and corporate clients. During the 80's I moved into a large studio and began working primarily on advertising and commercial accounts but missed my first love, shooting editorial assignments with a journalistic flair and had no outlet for personal projects. Then I discovered the World Wide Web in 1993 and launched the first version of my website the following year that featured only samples of photojournalistic approach. My website exposed me and my work to a global audience and has resulted in photojournalism assignments in the midwest from agencies, academic institutions, magazines and publications in Australia, California, Canada, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Germany, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Corporate credits include Miles Labs, Eli Lilly, Ameritech, Hoosier Racing Tire, Holiday Rambler, Coachmen, Kitty Litter, National Steel and regional healthcare and financial institutions. Academic credits include University of Notre Dame, Culver Academy, St. Mary's College, Indiana and Pudue University, Wittenburg University, Aquinas College, Ancilla College, Vanderbilt University, Johns Hopkins, Trinity International University and University of Wisconsin at River Falls. I am a frequent lecturer at C.A.S.E.(Council for Advancement and Support of Education) seminars presenting examples of photography for academic institutions. Magazine credits include Redbook, Fortune, Entrepreneur, Inside Buick, Promo, Athlon Publications, Dental Economics, Young Physician's, Mutual Funds, Customer Support, Food Service Equipment and Supply, For Women First and two German magazines, NeuePost and Burda. I am a member of the Chicago chapter of A.S.M.P. (American Society of Media Photographers), E.P. (Editorial Photographers), N.P.P.A.(National Press Photographers Association) and U.P.A.A. (University Photographers Association of America). I belong to these organizations as opposed to standard wedding groups because they focus entirely on photojournalism.
